HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – March 31, 2022 – PRLog — “The Salon,” the new digital series from Executive Producers Kelsey Grammer and Tom Russo, and writer/director/producer Roxanne Messina Captor for Messina Captor Films, has received a nomination for “Best Ensemble Cast – Comedy” from the 2022 Indie Series Awards, announced Emmy Award-nominated filmmaker Captor, a nominee for the CBS special “Home Sweet Homeless.” The Indie Series Awards will be presented at the Colony Theatre in Burbank, California on Thursday, April 7th. “The Salon” which also won “Best Digital Series” at the iHollywood Film Festival, can be seen on SofyTV and is distributed by Select Services Films and Tri-Continental Distribution.
“The Salon” pivots from the comedic to the dramatic with an ensemble cast that mirrors the culturally diverse richness of the world outside the “The Salon’s” rarified atmosphere. “The Salon,” one of the first web series to feature a Deaf actor (Eddie Buck) in a lead role, Also, the ensemble cast includes Harry Shearer, Luis Jose Lopez, Mason Grammer, Akende Munalula, Candy Washington, Vanessa Garcia, Chalo Savino, Jeanette O’Connor, Jennifer Lee Weaver, Gail Bearden, Derek Warburton, Anthony Tai with guest actor Kate Linder and a cameo by KTLA entertainment reporter Sam Rubin.
Filmmaker Messina Captor’s goal for her series was to juxtapose the lives of patrons and workers in a Beverly Hills beauty salon. Here the stage would be set to tackle tough topics with frank on-screen dialog. “I knew I wanted to have our cast representative of the microcosm of our nation, the world, including the deaf community. The series is comedic with deep subject matters and brilliantly acted by our remarkably diverse and eclectic cast. I couldn’t be prouder of this ‘Best Ensemble Cast – Comedy’ nomination from the 2022 Indie Series Awards.”
About Roxanne Messina Captor and Messina Captor Films: Emmy nominated director/producer Messina Captor, a protégé of Francis Coppola, was recently appointed by Governor Newsom to the CA Arts Council. She is developing “Dream Moms,” a project she wrote, with Hallmark. Formerly Executive Director of the SF International Film Festival, she was one of the founding original programming executives for TNT. Her documentary “Homecoming: Veterans, Wives and Mothers” won Best of Festival at the iHollywood Film Festival. It is distributed by Typhon on Demand, Sofy TV, and Shorts Oscar TV. “Thank You for Your Service” received the “Best Narrative Award for Hall of Fame Women’s History Month and was an official selection in the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival. Winning the FIVE STAR AWARD BEST FILM for EXPRESSION was the documentary – HOMECOMING: VETERANS – WIVES – MOTHERS. This short film saluted the military service of women and followed their challenges on a new battlefield-The Home- front.
The BEST DIGITAL SERIES award went to THE SALON (2020). Messina Captor reflects on her project: “‘The Salon’ is a microcosm of our world and I am delighted that it has resonated with so many of our viewers 18+, many of whom have remarked how welcome it was to have a comedy come into their lives during these challenging times. It was always my hope that people would see a little of themselves in one of more of these characters. I like to describe as series as the juxtaposition of truth and reality, fantasy and fact, and perfection and imperfection. We were so fortunate to be able to complete this project during the pandemic with a masterful post-production. This included expressive music by Judith Owen.”
“The Salon” is based upon Captor’s award-winning short film, “A Couple of White Chicks at The Hairdresser”which she wrote, directed and produced in 2009 which starred Shelley Long, Harry Shearer and Kate Linder. The short premiered at the Cannes Short Film Corner, was the MOW Pick for Shorts International Network on Direct TV and Frontier, and was an “Oscar Pick” for Largo’s streaming service. “The Salon” continues the original storyline arc of “A Couple of White Chicks…” adapted to a digital format to address audiences’ preferences in 2020.

A “Couple of White Chicks at the Hairdresser” to be featured on Sofy.TV
Can Two Adversaries Become Best Friends? Let the audience decide! A hysterical short film that looks at the lives of salon patrons and the hairdresser that is their common thread. Messina Captor Films will be partnering with Sofy.TV during a weeklong special event.
LOS ANGELES – Feb. 16, 2019 – PRLog — Messina Captor’s short film, starring Harry Shearer, Shelley Long, Kate Linder, James Kyson Lee and Deborah Theaker is written, produced and directed by Roxanne Messina Captor. The dramedy focuses on the poignant, yet hilarious, unexpected friendship that develops between two competitive and very different women.
A Couple of White Chicks at the Hairdresser is Oscar-qualified and was an official selection at the Los Angeles Shorts International Film Festival, Downtown Film Festival of LA (DFFLA) and the New Orleans International Film Festival, among other festivals, and will be streaming as a featured selection on Sofy.TV, https://sofy.tv/, starting February 18, 2019. A special interview with Roxanne Messina Captor, Director, will air on Sofy.TV during this spotlighted week.
“It is exciting to have our film picked up and be featured on Sofy.TV where it will receive a broader audience,” said Messina Captor.
